The name “KraMar” was registered in 1945 and developed from a partnership formed several years earlier by Jack, Kath and Albert Kreamer. The business produced hand-plaited leather goods such as stock whips and belts. The three had learnt the craft in their earlier years working in their father’s business.
During the late 1940’s the business expanded into solid leather goods production including luggage straps, money bags and dog collars. The business was then relocated to Burwood in Sydney’s inner west. Throughout the 50’s and 60’s the business continued to grow, particularly in the area of pet accessories and pet care products into which it had expanded.
In 1966, Jack Kreamer made his first visit to America in search of new products to supply an expanding pet market in Australia. This laid the foundation for today’s business of manufacturing and importing pet accessories.
The family involvement in the business continued with two of Albert’s children joining the company, Ed in 1976 and Frances in 1984. In 1992, management of the business was passed over to Ed and Frances assuming the roles of Managing Director and Financial Controller respectively.
In September 2005 AMP Private Equity acquired a majority shareholding in the company and in September 2006 relocated from Villawood to a purpose built 10,000 m2 facility at Smeaton Grange in Sydney’s South West. The move underpinned the company’s commitment to manufacturing and enabled the business to continue it’s growth as the leading pet accessory company in Australia.
In July 2007 the company’s name was changed from KraMar Pet Supplies Pty Ltd to The KraMar Pet Company Pty Ltd. The change in name is reflective of the company’s shift away from being a traditional wholesaler of pet accessories to a modern, branded pet company that is focused upon developing innovative products that meet the needs of today’s consumer ie.
